Floral Park’s Official Spring Start


A chilly morning, accompanied by snow flurries provided a unique background and found nearly 100 children and their parents journeying to the Floral Park Floral Park Recreation Center for the annual Easter Egg Hunt.

The recreation staff, with a major assist from 14 volunteers from Floral Park Memorial High School, moved some of the fun activities into the warmth of the shelter house.

Prior to the actual hunt, co-coordinators Mary Jane O’Malley and Wendy Bilka organized a wide range a fun games for the little ones. Children, old and young enjoyed numerous games and were delighted to receive a wide variety of prizes for their efforts.

The Easter Bunny (Katie Cotsalas) walked around handing out jelly beans and created picture opportunities with the basket caring youngsters.

At 9:30 a.m., the official signal was sounded and the children who were under five years old gleefully charged into Tiny Town, while 15 minutes later, the older set gathered plastic filled eggs by the stage area.

Mayor Tom Tweedy welcomed parents and children as he wished all a happy holiday. Trustees Jim Rhatigan and Trustee Dr. Lynn Pombonyo, along with Superintendent Kurt Meyfohrt, assistant Tom Dillion, Village Attorney Doug Hayden and recreation committee member Kelly Kuntz were on hand for this long time recreation department spring time tradition.
