The Hempstead Town Board will honor six dedicated members of the Hispanic community during the town’s annual celebration of National Hispanic Heritage Month on Oct. 8 at 3 p.m. at the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St. in Hempstead. All are welcome to attend. Through Oct. 15, the Ikarus Gallery Cultural Program will present an exhibit of paintings by Latino artists in the lobby of town hall.

Saturday, October 11

The annual rabies vaccination clinic is being held on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the town animal shelter, 3320 Beltagh Ave. in Wantagh. There is a nominal $10 fee (cash only) per vaccination and a limit of three pets vaccinated per household. Pregnant pets cannot be vaccinated. For the safety of all participants, cats must be brought in carriers and dogs must be leashed. All dogs must be licensed. You must bring the current license or the purchase of a new one ($10 for spayed/neutered dogs; $18 for non-spayed/non-neutered dogs) will be required. If applicable, proof of spay/neuter must be presented. Pre-register your pets for the Rabies clinic in advance by calling 516-785-5220. All pets adopted will receive free spay/neuter, microchipping and required vaccinations.

Environmentally minded Long Islanders will be on the Long Beach Boardwalk at National Blvd. on Saturday, Oct. 11 from 1 to 2:30 p.m. for a rally against fracking, part of the Global Frackdown, a massive international day of action calling for a future powered by clean, renewable energy, not one that depends on dirty fossil fuels. The rally is set to take place at the Long Beach boardwalk, hard hit by Superstorm Sandy, to call attention to fracking’s impacts on climate change. Organizers will also be highlighting the risks of a proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) facility off the coast. You can help Long Island encourage Governor Cuomo to be a leader in preventing climate catastrophe and transitioning to a safe energy future by banning fracking and vetoing the Port Ambrose LNG facility.


Sunday, October 12

Join the South Shore Audubon Society on Sunday, Oct. 12, from 9:30 a.m. to noon for a bird walk at Point Lookout Town Park and Lido Beach Passive Nature Area. The bird walk is free of charge. Walk leaders and other birders and nature enthusiasts will be happy to share their knowledge and experience with you. Bring binoculars. Rain will cancel the bird walk. Floral Park And Sewanhaka high schools participate in the Marching Band Festival at Mitchell Field.

The United Methodist Church at 35 Verbena Ave. in Floral park will host an antique appraisal event on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m Join Marian Rizzo and Adam Zimmerman from Syl-Lee Antiques of Glen Cove for their expert valuation of your precious objects. The Floral Park Woman’s Club will hold their October Daytime meeting at the Floral Park Recreation Center on Wednesday, Oct. 15 at 12:30 p.m. Following refreshments and a business meeting, the club will participate in Chair Yoga with Maria. The Hempstead Town Board will honor fire service personnel for their dedication to duty and commitment to service in the Town’s annual Firematic Awards ceremony on Oct. 16 at 7 p.m. at the Nathan L.H. Bennett Pavilion, 1 Washington St. in Hempstead.

North End Civic Association meets at the Reliance Fire House on Thursday, Oct. 16 at 7:30 p.m. This month’s guest speaker will be Mayor Thomas Tweedy.
