Monthly Cancer Support Group
Franklin Hospital’s cancer support group will meet on Monday, Jan. 7 at 2 p.m. in the former coffee shop at North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream. (Please note the new location for 2013.)
The group regularly meets the first Monday of every month from 2 to 4 p.m. It is open to all cancer survivors, including family members and is ideal for people who need someone to talk to about the illness. Discussions include new medicines and treatments, advice on how to cope and also provides emotional support.

The New York metro area’s top bariatric surgery program at Syosset Hospital, designated a Bariatric Surgery Center of Excellence, has joined with Franklin Hospital in providing free informational seminars of life-saving weight-loss surgery. North Shore LIJ Franklin Hospital in Valley Stream will host a bariatric seminar at 6:30 p.m. in the hospital’s surgical waiting room.

New Year Luncheon
The Floral Park Historical Society will host its annual New Year Luncheon on Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013 at Duggan’s Restaurant in Floral Park. Members and friends are invited. Elmont American Legion Post 1033
It’s time to highlight Elmont American Legion Post 1033 located in the impressive building on Hill Ave. Besides providing great Memorial Day parades, the post is involved in many programs that benefit the community. The thrift shop at the Floral Park United Methodist Church located at 35 Verbena Ave., is now open from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Wednesdays and Saturdays. There is a wide selection of household items, jewelry, antiques, clothing, as well as a Christmas room and Halloween decorations.

•Employment Referrals for Seniors. The NC Dept. of Senior Citizen Affairs is a resource to employers seeking qualified workers and to mature job seekers, 55+, who want assistance with employment and résumé preparation. Services are free of charge.
•The Foster Grandparents Program is recruiting senior volunteers to share their time and love with children in Nassau County. Volunteers receive a non-reportable stipend, transportation reimbursement, paid holidays, sick days and vacation days.
•If you are 55+, make your spare time count. Join the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program, a national organization, and share your talents and skills at one of the many diversified placements.
