The Village of Floral Park will be in for quite a treat at its annual Memorial Day Observance thanks to guest speaker Steven J. Ryan, an Army Reserve Lieutenant Colonel who was asked by the Floral Park American Legion. The highly decorated Nassau County police officer has almost 30 years of service as an Army Reservist and has served in East Africa and Afghanistan.
Ryan joined the New York Army National Guard in 1987, enrolled in ROTC at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, where he received a Master’s Degree in public administrating and graduated from the Army Airborne School and Air Assault School at Ft. Campbell, KY.
He was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in 1992 and served until 1995. In 2000, he was promoted to captain and became an instructor. Following the 9-11 attack, Ryan served three months at Ground Zero assisting the rescue and recovery operations and received a Meritorious Service Medal.
Ryan’s tours in the Army Reserve have taken him to a number of far-flung places around the globe. He volunteered to serve in Iraq from 1992 to 1994 and later went to Afghanistan in 2009 as a Major and Operations Mission Planner.
In 2011, Ryan was promoted to lieutenant colonel and graduated from Command and General Staff School. He also became Commandant of the Veterans Corps of Artillery SNY. As recently as last year, he served in East Africa training and advising a unit deploying troops to Somalia.
Ryan’s military awards include The Bronze Star, Joint Meritorious Service medal, Joint and Army Commendation medals and the Combat Infantry Badge. He also has been awarded the Parachutist Wings of Israel, France and Jordan and the German Armed Forces Proficiency Badge in Gold. Ryan will speak on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30 at ceremonies beginning at about 11 a.m. at Veterans Memorial Park at the corner of Tulip and Plainfield avenues in Floral Park.
